Raavan was a towering personality of the great epic the Ramayana. He was grandson of the great sage Pulastya and son of sage Vishrawa. Raavan was born of Kaikasi, daughter of demon king Sumali who had lost his kingdom of Lanka to Vishnu. Lanka was being ruled by Kuber, son of sage Vishrawa by another wife. Raavan was a combination peculiar qualities. He was a great warrior, highly learned, well-versed in the Vedas, a musician and expert in politics. He possessed several boons from Brahma and Shiva. On the contrary, Raavan was also overambitious, created reign of terror and had evil designs for otherís women. Under the influence of his sister, he carried away Seeta, wife of exiled prince Ram. It is surprising that he acted as the Priest when Ram performed Puja for victory over him. Ultimately, Ram killed him but even then Raavan taught him lessons on Rajneeti.
