BHISHMA PRATIGYA(1970)
Another great historical saga of a son sacrificing his entire happiness and life for restoring the love affair of his father and upholding the Promises he made. The father responding to this by bestowing him with rare boon of "embracing death as per wish". King Shantanu of Hastinapur was upset on account of the deep love he had for Satyavati, the beautiful daughter of Dheevar Raj. He could not get her as his wife because her father put a difficult condition. The condition was to assure that her son was to be taken as the king’s successor. The king had already a grown-up and able son Devbrat from his former wife Ganga. When Devbrat knew about the anxiety of his father, he called Dheevar Raj, promised to give up claim of succession. Not only that, he vowed to remain unmarried for the whole life, thus not to have any child himself. Shantanu, the father, was shocked, surprised ,overwhelmed and obliged to his son for his rare sacrifice . He gave him the boon of ‘death at will’. Devbrata was henceforth called BHISHMA for the unique and awful promises he made and he lived the longest life in Mahabharat. Bhishma had many ups and downs in his life to protect his words Although respected by all, he had the least pleasure in his life.
